Career Journey
Before dedicating his expertise to JEC Eye Hospitals and Clinics, he held various strategic positions, including Head of the Medical Research Section at RSCM (1995–1998), Chair of the FKUI Research Development Committee (1997–2002), and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at FKUI/RSCM (1997–2005). In the public sector, he served as Chair of the National Committee for the Prevention of Visual Impairment and Blindness at the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2004–2007), Member of the National Research Council (1999–2004), Executive Secretary of the Indonesian Medical Education Committee under the Directorate General of Higher Education (2003–2005), Member of the National Committee on Organ and Tissue Transplantation (2021), and Supervisory Board Member of Cicendo Eye Hospital (2021). His leadership in professional organizations includes serving as Chair of the Central Board of the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association (PERDAMI) (2003–2010), Chair of the Indonesian College of Ophthalmology (2010–2016), and Chair of the Indonesian Association of Supporters for the Blind-Bank Mata Indonesia. Internationally, he was active as Council Member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) (2010–2016), Vice President of APAO (2010–2012), and has served as an Expert Panel Member of the Presidential Medical Team of the Republic of Indonesia since 2005. For his dedication, he received the LIPI Best Young Researcher Award (1994), Satyalancana Wira Karya from the President of Indonesia (2009), Arthur-Liem's Award on Leaderships from APAO (2010), and the Tun Hussein Onn Oration Award in Malaysia (2019).
Educational Background
He earned his Medical Doctor degree (1980) and Ophthalmology Specialist degree (1988) from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, and obtained his Doctorate (Ph.D.) from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands (1992). He has also served as a lifetime member of the Medical Commission of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences since 2008.
